Balfolk Dance for Beginners

WHAT ITS ABOUT

Balfolk Is a dynamic dance movement that takes its root in France and has now spread all over Europe. It thrives on innovation, celebrating a rich tapestry of European influences. Participants are allowed to express their creativity while drawing from traditional steps and rhythms. The music itself is a blend of various regional styles, incorporating elements from Nordic, Mediterranean, Easter European and Celtic traditions among others. Balfolk emphasises community and participation, often featuring simple and accessible dance steps. It encourages social interaction and inclusivity and fosters a sense of connection and joy, making it a delightful experience for dancers of all skill levels.

In this class, participants will learn popular dances from the Balfolk repertoire, focusing on how to move efficiently as a group, as individuals, or with a partner, how to listen to the music, they will master the simple steps of several common dances, all while immersing themselves in the conviviality of Balfolk. This is a beginners class, but all are welcome!

A LITTLE ON THE FACILITATORS

Kate, a native of France, grew up in the Burgundy region where during her teens she immersed herself in the local folk-dance revival of the 1970s. She went on to teach many dance styles, including African dance accompanied by the live drumming ensemble Songbong. She went on to find a passion for Balfolk dance, eventually being invited to several festivals, including Wellington Folk Festival, the Wanaka festival of colour, Canterbury Folk Festival and more, to hold Balfolk workshops. Kate now runs the mini Balfolk Balls in Dunedin every last sunday of the month, so join the class, and then come along to a miniball!
