MATTERS ARISING

Te Pūkenga – Maya has been looking into the areas that will require the name/title to be changed when the Polytechnic becomes part of Te Pūkenga.  It appears mostly clubs and societies policies will be affected and will work on this during the changeover period.

TE RŌPŪ MĀORI UPDATE

Te Rōpū Māori AGM held last evening lasting 4 hours.  Thank you to Melissa for chairing this meeting.

The Te Rōpū Māori elections have finished and a full executive has been elected.  The Treasurer role is elected seperately so this should be finalised soon.

Focussing on exams and getting the exam breakfasts organised.

TRM went through to a mini version of Te Huinga Tauira. And they placed first in mōteatea and third in male leader division

HEALTH AND SAFETY and OUSA UPDATE

As attached.  Additional to this there was an incident with an intoxicated person with an RU OK volunteer at the Facetime event recently.  This was dealt with internally and the person evicted.

UNIVERSITY OTAGO PACIFIC ISLAND STUDENTS’ ASSOCIATION UPDATE

            AGM being held this Sunday – elected 2023 UOPISA Executive

NZUSA UPDATES

            NZUSA supporting the Uni and TEU strike.

            3-year free fees freeze push being supported and going ahead.

EXECUTIVE 2023 ELECTIONS RESULTS

For noting. Total of 1880 votes cast.  The Returning Officer will attend the next executive meeting to talk to his report.  Congratulations was given to the elected executive for 2023.

UNIVERSITY TERTIARY SPORT NEW ZEALAND

It was brought to Melissa’s attention that the University of Otago was disaffiliating from UTSNZ without consultation with students, sports groups, and stakeholders.

It was expressed how poor it was that students and sporting groups weren’t given an opportunity to have their say.  The University of Otago offers sporting scholarships to students and now they don’t get a chance to attend the world championships.  

Debbie asked if she could give some context and explained how USNZ were disestablished a few years back and OUSA didn’t support joining the new entity when it restarted.  It was expensive for Otago students to attend sporting events owing to airfares, uniform costs etc.

Melissa explained she had followed up this week after hearing of this and met with the Director of UTSNZ, Sarah Anderson, Director of Student Services, Claire Gallop to get some insight but it is clear the decision has been made. It was said the university can’t afford the $25,000 per annum membership fee.

The Vice Chancellor released a statement in the Otago bulletin today confirming their decision to withdraw.

REFERENDUM

The second semester referendum is going slowly but surely.  Thus far there have been 911 votes cast and it closes at 4pm today.

GENERAL BUSINESS

Security/data breach – the Critic office received an anonymous tip of a privacy breach at the university of Otago with emails being hacked and after doing some research they contacted the university. The University have expressed their gratitude for the Critic Editor.  “We love Critic Te Ārohi and Fox the Editor”.

This is being managed by the University at regular meetings, contacting those involved and their information technology (ITS) service team are securing systems further.

Handover to 2023 Executive – on 30 October from 1-3pm there is a planned hui for all the exec’.  An invitation and more information will come from Melissa later.

Tuition and Student Services Fees increases for 2023 – the fees were increased yesterday at the University Council meeting., the SSF increase was 12% which was met with reluctance by Melissa.
