Critic Te Ārohi Positions
Critic Te Ārohi Positions
Want to get involved with Critic Te Ārohi and help to produce the longest-running and most award-winning student magazine across the motu? We are currently looking for Reporters, Staff Writers, Illustrators and Photographers for 2026.
We have several fixed-term positions going, ranging from 4-6 hours per week, 27 weeks in total, from February 9th to October 16th, 2026 during semester time. You must be a student based in Dunedin, or a University of Otago student not based in Dunedin.
Illustrators
Illustrators should be creative, skilled, and ready to help elevate our content. You’ll work with the Critic Designer as part of the design team, creating illustrations in whatever medium suits you best, watercolour, ink, or digital. Ideally, you’ll be comfortable with Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, and able to produce high-quality work quickly. There will also be opportunities to develop skills in other multimedia areas like sculpture, digital content, and animation.
Staff Writers
Staff Writers will be responsible for conducting research and interviews and producing content on a range of topics across the three sections of the magazine: news, features and culture. Some writing experience is preferred.
Senior News Reporter
We’re also looking for a senior news reporter to join the team. You’ll be a current senior law student or someone with a solid understanding of media law, and a keen sense of what matters to students and the wider Critic audience. If you have great general knowledge, especially around tertiary issues and local and national affairs, we want to hear from you.
To apply for any position, send your CV, a cover letter specifying which role you are applying for, the OUSA application form and three examples of your work to jobs@ousa.org.nz by January 16th 2026.
If you don’t already have a portfolio, check out Critic from 2025 and create a few pieces inspired by the style of the magazine. If you don’t have three examples of your work yet, make some! Writers can submit anything we’d publish: news, listicles, opinion pieces, reviews, quizzes, or something totally new. Illustrators can create drawings, designs, or visual concepts in any medium that fits Critic’s look and feel. Let us know your versatile skill set: photographers that have videography experience, illustrators that can write, photographers that can illustrate, writers that can edit video etc
